Sergio Mastroartistic director

WKSThe Wiener Kammersymphonie is a chamber ensemble comprising highly talented musicians performing in Vienna. The driving force behind this unique project is the desire to bring individual talents together in a special and artistic co-operation.

Leaving aside all artistic norms and stereotypes, this project brings to its audiences a vast musical repertoire, moving from classics to 19th century to contemporary compositions often performing works by (unjustly) forgotten and overlooked composers with the aim of bringing out the very best of the ensemble members.

The WKS was founded in March 2006 on the occasion of the Mozart Year and made its outstandingly successful debut with a series of concerts in Spain that met with both public and critical acclaim describing the group as the best performers of a long season entirely dedicated to Mozart. Continuing this experience, the WKS subsequently realised a series of projects dedicated to musical contemporaries of Mozart.

Open to all types of artistic collaboration, they performed at the Umbria Music Festival in 2008 with a ‘crossover project’, fusing the pure Viennese classic style with hip-hop dance. In December 2008 the ensemble had the privilege to perform at the prestigious Vienna Musikverein. This successful debut led to invitations to play at numerous international festivals including the Ankara Festival in April 2009 and many Italian theatres including the Teatro Piccinni in Bari, the Ravello Festival, Alba Music Festival and Side Music Festival in Turkey.

The members of WKS perform music regularly and predominantly music from the Classical and Romantic periods in special arrangements for a string quintet of two violins, viola, cello and double bass) following similar musical and artistic components of a ‘symphonic’ concept, rather than true ‘chamber music’. In this form the WKS has performed in South America (Brazil, Argentina and Colombia), Istanbul (Süreyya Opera) and in the UK.
